Croatia – Dalmatia

Croatia – Dalmatia

Sea, Split, Dubrovnik and the Krka waterfalls in one week. Coach from Turzovka, seven nights in apartments near Trogir.

Dalmatia is our oldest tour. The first coach left in September 2009 and since then we have brought more than two thousand people to the same stretch of coast. We stay in apartments in Seget near Trogir, three minutes on foot from the beach. These are ordinary family apartments belonging to people we have known for years, not a hotel complex.

The programme leaves room to do nothing. Four days are excursions, three are free. We take the ferry into Split and walk Diocletian's Palace and the cellars underneath, where part of Game of Thrones was filmed. Dubrovnik is a full day; the walls take an hour and a half to circle and in July you do it early, because the stone reaches 45 °C by noon. The Krka waterfalls still have one section where you are allowed to swim, unlike Plitvice.

Hvar is saved for the second-to-last day. We sail from Split, two hours out, and dinner is booked at a konoba above the harbour — octopus cooked under the peka lid, which has to be ordered a day ahead. Prices in Croatia rose noticeably after the switch to the euro, so budget roughly 30 to 40 euros a day for personal spending. The coach leaves Turzovka at seven in the evening, runs via Bratislava and Zagreb, and puts you at the sea by six the next morning. The apartments have kitchens, which saves families with children a lot of money. There is a supermarket five minutes away in Seget and the fish market in Trogir opens at six.

What you will see

  • Diocletian's Palace in Split and the cellars beneath it
  • The Dubrovnik city walls and the view over the old town roofs
  • Krka National Park, where swimming below the falls is still allowed
  • Hvar island and a peka dinner at a konoba above the harbour
  • Trogir, a UNESCO-listed town on its own small island
  • Seven nights in apartments three minutes from the beach

Our tips

  • The beaches are pebble, not sand. Buy water shoes for 8 euros — they will save your holiday.
  • Sea urchins are common. If you step on one, do not dig the spines out with a needle; they work their way out within a week.
  • The Split–Hvar ferry sells out in summer. Book online the day before; you will not get a ticket at the pier in the morning.
  • Fish is priced by weight in restaurants. Ask for the price per kilo before you pick your piece off the ice.
